  • "My manager wants me to burn a vacation day because the roads are closed."

Is there anything I can do? There's a very severe snowstorm, and the government is telling everyone not to leave their homes. I literally can't drive to work.
  • I told him I could very easily work from home, especially since about 90% of my meetings are on Teams anyway. But he is completely refusing.
  • He just sent a message to the entire team on the group chat, embarrassing me in front of them for not showing up, and saying I have to take the day as PTO.
  • I'm upset because I don't want to leave my colleagues stranded, but at the same time, why should I work a full day if I'm being forced to use my vacation time? It makes absolutely no sense.

  • Cold Cheetah5032 Your boss is an hole.
  • Internal_Set_6564 If he is telling you not to work and take PTO, you seem to have no choice. Does he have a skip manager? HR? Or is this an Owner-manager?
  • Free_Technology_4493 Take it as a sick day!

  • WA_State_Buckeye You should check with HR. Usually, if officials are telling you not to come in to work, the company makes an official decision, not just your immediate boss. This USUALLY means no pay, so if you want paid you have to take a PTO. You need to read your employee handbook on their Inclement Weather policy. But you PROBABLY will still have to take PTO just to keep getting paid.
  • battlehamstar Not really related but as a former fed who was doge'd I will say that was the outgoing policy of the fed govt. if the world ended we were required to burn a vacation day if we were unable to make it to the office.
